KEY POINTS IN KENTUCKY FOOTBALL HISTORY
2007: Schools were divided into six classes (instead of 4,) but Mayfield remained 1-A.
1991: Starting this year, the top 4 teams in each district qualified for the post-season.
1987: Starting this year, there were 4 regions/8 districts in each of the four classes with 2 playoff teams per district.
1975: Starting this year, there were 4 classes (instead of 3,) but Mayfield remained 2-A.
1959: KHSAA instituted class football…and the playoffs…with Jefferson County schools being 3-A and the rest of the state divided into 1-A and 2-A
1952: finished 2nd in the Western Kentucky Conference…to Sturgis
1951: finished 3rd…behind Murray and Bowling Green
1947 WKC champs! only loss was season finale to Paducah 6-54 (Pad. was not in the conference at that time)
1942: Henry Cochran agreed to become Paducah’s coach just before the start of the season…then changed his mind and went back to Mayfield…for what turned out to be one more season) Cardinals tied for 2nd in the WKC
1939: Henry Cochran, former Paducah and Alabama star…after coaching one year of high school ball in Alabama… hired by Mayfield
1924: the “Little Ten Conference”…forerunner to the Western Kentucky Conference…began play with nine charter members…including Mayfield
